Parents hail new school block

Parents in Sharpvale Education Zone, Ntcheu District have expressed excitement with a new school block at Nanyangu Primary School.

Speaking in an interview on Saturday, the school’s Parents and Teachers Association chairperson Clement Matemba said the school was established in 1999 with two classes, Standard One and Two, before expanding to Standard Five.

“However, the increase in classes resulted in some children learning in grass-thatched structures. However, we thank Ntcheu District Council for constructing the structure. Now our children are learning in proper classrooms,” he said.

Village head Solijala said the school block will motivate children to remain in school.

“Children were discouraged to go to school, especially during the rainy season because they were learning in make-shift classrooms,” he said.

The school’s head teacher Enock Chikaliso said the new school block has motivated children who dropped out to return to school this academic year.

“Some learners chose to travel long distances to access education in other schools in Bwanje area. Even teachers are also motivated to teach in such a modern facility,” he said.

Chikaliso said the school, which has 625 learners, was expected to enrol more in the next academic year, adding that the new block has further expanded enrolment to Standard Eight.

The structure was constructed under the Government to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) funded by the World Bank.

With Gesd funds, district councils can implement various projects such school blocks, market shelters and others.
